A&A

Are you interested in going to college? Curious about scholarships, financial aid, test prep, and choosing a path to higher education? Then this A & A is for you! We will be learning about the college admissions process, meeting with college representatives, and taking college tours. It's never too early to start thinking about your post-high school possibilities.  

Students will study facts and figures regarding the world’s oceans and will use that knowledge in a real world setting similar to knowledge bowl, but better because it revolves around the Marine Environment.  Students will practice a competition in class in preparation for the competition held off campus.  During that time, teams will form and collaborative learning will be emphasized in a way to encourage everyone in the class to improve their skills, not just those who are star players.  This fast paced class will focus on addressing both the competitive and collaborative side of student work.   

“Is it just me, or did it get really hot in this portable?”  If you’ve ever had a similar thought, then this A&A is for you.  We will build and install sensors in the portables and park to autonomously monitor numerous variables over long periods of time, such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, light levels, and even rainfall.  Basic data stations will be built around Arduino microcontrollers and will store their data on SD cards, but advanced users can include Raspberry Pi microcomputers in their projects for more power (such time-lapse or motion-triggered photography).  Students will learn the basics of both Arduino and Raspberry Pi, as well as some foundational electronics and data manipulation.  An ultimate goal would be to create camouflaged weather stations capable of recording a week’s worth of data on a single battery charge.

Do you think it's wrong that one in three teens will experience physical, emotional, or sexual abuse in a dating relationship?  Are you interested in diving deep into the dynamics of healthy dating?  Do you like to have fun and eat pizza?  Then this group is for you!  We will analyze violence in music videos, jump in and out of gender boxes, and walk in the shoes of real teens who have been in unhealthy relationships, along with other fun and interactive activities.  You don't have to be in a relationship to learn and discuss healthy practices like navigating consent, fighting fair, and boundaries.  We will conclude with creating a way to share what you learned and shift the culture of your community into having healthier relationships. 

 Have you turned down a medical career because you don't want to work with people or diseases? Do you love science? If you answered yes to one or both of these, then this is the A & A for you! This A&A will explore careers in the medical field that are not usually thought of through labs and case studies. Careers will include geneticists, technicians, phlebotomists, and therapists.
