During an in-depth, month-long Photo Ark class, IDEA, SAMi, and SOTA students embarked on a mission to create human connections to animals through photography.
In this “mini-term” project, 48 students honed their skills at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, Point Defiance Park, and in professional studios, mastering portraiture lighting techniques. Their goal? Create compelling images where an insect or reptile takes as much space in the frame as an elephant, fostering a compassion and empathy between viewers and wildlife. By the end of the month, they created a catalogue of photos the zoo could use for its social media.
The project is based on the work of Joel Sartore, the founder of Photo Ark, a groundbreaking effort to help save at-risk species by photographing every species currently living in the world’s zoos, aquariums and wildlife sanctuaries.
Photo Ark “mini-term” is led by SOTA photography teacher Heather Gilson and SAMi social studies teacher Duncan White.
