Beginning this year, all Washington students are required to start their High School & Beyond Plan (HSBP) in 7th grade. The HSBP helps students explore who they are, what careers they might enjoy, and which classes, skills, and experiences will prepare them for life after graduation. Tacoma Public Schools uses SchooLinks to guide students through these activities in a simple, age-appropriate way, all students starting in 6th grade can access through Clever.
Each grade level has a few key activities that build year after year:
- 7th Grade: Students take their first personality/career interest assessment and explore at least one career profile. They begin thinking about future goals and learn how their interests connect to possible careers.
- 8th Grade: Students deepen their career exploration, select career favorites, complete a short financial aid awareness lesson, and start thinking about which high-school courses support their goals.
- 9th–10th Grade: Students continue career exploration, update goals, build emerging résumés, and complete annual financial aid lessons while confirming the classes they need for graduation and their chosen pathway.
- 11th Grade: Students revisit goals, refine their graduation pathway plan, strengthen résumés, and begin preparing for senior-year decisions, including postsecondary options and financial aid.
- 12th Grade: Students finalize and submit their HSBP, complete senior-year requirements, and identify their post-high school plan. For TPS seniors, this includes a Verified Acceptance to Next Institution (VANI) component once launched.
Throughout the year, students complete short tasks in their SchooLinks To-Do List, which automatically build their HSBP over time.
SchooLinks encourages family involvement in the High School & Beyond Plan. Parents and guardians can access their students' SchooLinks through an invitation from their student, allowing them to review their student’s plans, goals, and progress. This makes it easier for families to support students as they navigate important choices and plan for the future.
