Post-season competition continues for many TPS student-athletes

The road to state competition is underway for spring athletics, and Tacoma Public Schools will be well represented by our student-athletes.

Girls golf
In the 4A Girls State Championships, Stadium High School freshman Cienna Chabot finished in a tie for 10th place overall with a score of 74 at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey. Sophomore Ella Enciso also represented the Tigers at the state tournament.

In 3A, Silas High School had an exceptional showing in day 1 at the Girls State Championships at Deer Park Golf Club. Junior Opal Herrmann finished 3rd overall with a score of 69, while juniors Kenley Taylor and Ella Follen both tied for 4th place with scores of 70. Freshman Angelina Williams and junior Olivia Bustamante also competed at the state tournament, helping showcase the continued strength of the Silas golf program.

Boys soccer
Stadium defeated Hanford 5-0 in their first 4A state round game of the season. They advance to the quarterfinals to play the winner of Sumner vs. Lewis and Clark on May 22 or 23 – TBD.

Silas boys faced off in the 3A West Central District championship game on Saturday at Mt. Tahoma versus the Gig Harbor Tides. Silas lost a tough game 2-1, but they advance to the 3A WIAA State Soccer Tournament as a #3 seed and will host Edmonds Woodway on Friday, May 22, at 8 p.m. at Curtis High School.

Girls tennis
Silas is competing in tennis the 3A Girls State Championship by Kate Shouse / C. Mock in the doubles tournament.

Mount Tahoma High School is represented in the singles tournament by Vanessa Swain in the #12 seed on Friday in Vancouver.

Boys tennis
Stadium is represented in tennis in the 4A Boys State Championships by Becker Templin, who begins tournament play Friday in Kennewick.

Mount Tahoma High School is represented in the 3A Boys State Championships by Merlin Ly, the tournament’s # 12 seed. Merlin opens first-round action Friday in Vancouver.

Silas will also be represented in the 3A Boys Doubles State Championships by L. Wenz and A. Tatlonghari, with first-round matches beginning Friday in Vancouver.

Esports
Mason Middle School made a major statement this past weekend at the inaugural WSSEA Middle School Invitational Esports Tournament. Led by coach and 8th grade science teacher Rhonda “Rhoni” Davidson, Mason students competed against top programs from across the state and delivered an outstanding performance on the big stage.

The Mustangs brought home a tournament championship in Splatoon 3, defeating Tenino in the finals with a dominant 3-0 sweep in the best-of-five championship match.

In Rocket League, Mason continued its impressive run by placing 2nd and 3rd overall, eliminating both Tenino squads that captured state titles last spring. Mason eventually fell to a strong Medical Lake team that finished the tournament undefeated.

The success of the program was a testament to the leadership of Coach Davidson and the dedication of the student competitors, many of whom are 8th graders poised to continue their esports careers at the high school level.

Next up for Mason esports is the Middle School State Championships.

Girls fastpitch
Stadium girls played in the 4A West Central District fastpitch tournament on May 15. They entered the tournament as the #7 seed, playing the #10 team Yelm. They lost their first game 8-1. Unfortunately, due to heavy rains, tournament managers had to shift the bracket to a single elimination tournament and due to the loss, Stadium was unable to advance in the tournament. Good job and congratulations on your strong showing, Tigers!

Silas also played in the first round of the 3A West Central District tournament. The first round was a single elimination, and Silas was defeated 11-1 by Auburn Mountainview. Congrats on a great season, Silas Rams!
